Some ideas to help children that are struggling with reading

All children learn to read the same way.  Through a systematic, structured approach that closely links decoding and encoding (sound out to read and sounding out to spell) all children can learn to read.  Some take longer to do so than others, but with an approach strongly based on the Science of Reading, children will get there.

This video explains the science behind reading.  How we now know, all brains learn to read.

At school we are growing our library of decodable books.  This means as children develop their phonetic understanding, they can read successfully and are not guessing at what the words might be, or using the picture as a cue.  Alongside this we teach phonics in a structured, sequenced way to ensure children learn the spelling patterns they will need to decode.

This is a great video for understanding the sounds of the English language, by knowing these sounds, you can really help your child to learn to read and spell.

These videos are a great watch and give you some ideas of ways we can help children who may be struggling to get away with reading.

Reading interventions

The best thing you can do is talk to your child's teacher about your child's next steps and how you can help at home.  Lots of practice is key.
